Research Visit
Max Plank Institute for the History of Science in Berlin
3-10 October 2022
The visit gave us the opportunity to present our research hypothesis and first findings to advisory board members Divna Manolova and Serafina Cuomo as well as to receive feedback from colleagues working in an array of different fields. Interest in visualization strategies and their theoretical as well as cognitive underpinnings was the glue that kept all of us together and sparked stimulating conversations. We were motivated to look deeper into notions of accuracy and relationality and how they impacted the construction of rhetorical theory.

Diagrams have recently received special attention by medievalists for their variety of uses in a plurality of contexts. Their study allows us to better understand the ways different fields of knowledge were approached and taught within the classroom. This session focuses on diagrams found in Byzantine manuscripts of rhetorical, philosophical, and scientific content.
